About Tsavo
Tsavo is also conveniently positioned for travellers combining a Kenya safari with the coast. The parks can be accessed from the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor, making them suitable for itineraries connecting Nairobi, Mombasa, Diani Beach and other coastal destinations. Tsavo can also be combined with Amboseli National Park for a southern Kenya safari circuit or incorporated into longer Kenya wildlife itineraries.
Discover Tsavo National Park
Tsavo is one of Kenya’s defining wilderness destinations, covering two adjoining national parks: Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park. The two parks are separated by the Nairobi–Mombasa highway and railway and together form part of the extensive Tsavo Conservation Area. Both parks are managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service and are located in Taita-Taveta County in southeastern Kenya.
Tsavo offers a different safari experience from Kenya’s smaller and more densely visited wildlife destinations. Its expansive landscapes, semi-arid plains, volcanic formations and river systems create a sense of space that is central to the character of the destination.
Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East is Kenya’s largest national park, covering approximately 13,747 square kilometres according to the Kenya Wildlife Service. The park is characterized by semi-arid wilderness, open plains, acacia vegetation and dramatic geological features.
One of Tsavo East’s best-known attractions is its red-dusted elephants, whose appearance is associated with the park’s distinctive red soil. The park also features the Galana River, Yatta Plateau, Lugard Falls, Aruba Dam and several wildlife viewing areas. KWS records more than 500 bird species in the park, making Tsavo East relevant to both wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
Visitors can explore the park on game drives, photographic safaris and other guided experiences while looking for elephants, lions, buffaloes, leopards, giraffes and numerous smaller species.
Tsavo West National Park
West of the Nairobi–Mombasa highway lies Tsavo West National Park, covering approximately 9,065 square kilometres. Its scenery differs noticeably from Tsavo East, with volcanic hills, lava formations, springs, woodland and savannah landscapes.
Mzima Springs is one of the park’s most recognized attractions. Clear underground water emerges through the volcanic landscape, creating pools and waterways that support wildlife and birdlife. Other notable features include the Shetani Lava Flow, Lake Jipe, scenic viewpoints and the Tsavo West Rhino Sanctuary.
Tsavo West also has an important place in Kenyan history. The area is associated with the famous 1898 incidents involving lions during construction of the Kenya–Uganda Railway. The park also contains historical connections to the East African Campaign of the First World War.
Wildlife and Safari Experiences
Tsavo is an important wildlife landscape supporting elephants, lions, buffaloes, leopards, rhinos and many other species. The two parks offer different environments, allowing travellers to experience contrasting sides of the broader Tsavo ecosystem.
Game drives remain the principal way to explore Tsavo, while selected areas also provide opportunities for guided walks, photography, birdwatching and other nature-based experiences. Visitors should follow Kenya Wildlife Service regulations, remain on designated roads and maintain appropriate distances from wildlife.
Combining Tsavo with Other Kenyan Destinations
Tsavo works particularly well within a broader Kenya safari itinerary. Its location along the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor makes it possible to combine wildlife viewing with a coastal holiday.
Travellers can pair Tsavo with Mombasa for a safari-and-coast itinerary or continue towards Diani Beach for Indian Ocean beaches and marine experiences. Tsavo can also complement Amboseli National Park and other destinations within Wild Plush Safaris' Kenya safari collection.
For official information about the parks, attractions, access and visitor regulations, travellers can consult the Kenya Wildlife Service, which manages both Tsavo East and Tsavo West.
Whether visited as a dedicated wildlife safari or combined with Kenya’s coast, Tsavo provides an opportunity to experience one of the country's most extensive protected landscapes, with distinctive scenery, diverse wildlife and a rich natural and historical character.
